WIOA

What is WIOA?

The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) is landmark legislation that is designed to strengthen and improve our nation's public workforce system and help get Americans, including youth and those with significant barriers to employment, into high-quality jobs and careers and help employers hire and retain skilled workers.
How is SWCIL involved in WIOA?
New requirements of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) include the facilitation of informed choice and career counseling opportunities for individuals who are earning less than Federal minimum wage. In Minnesota, Centers for Independent Living were contracted by the MN Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) to conduct these sessions.

Annually, SWCIL and the employer offering subminimum wage programs (14(c) certificate holders) will coordinate to arrange an opportunity to meet individually with all employees earning less than Federal minimum wage. Each employee is allowed the opportunity to discuss employment options; learn about resources available to them; express their hopes, fears, and questions about employment; and learn about methods to overcome potential barriers.

For individuals who express interest in pursuing competitive, integrated employment, a SWCIL staff person will be available to attend their team meeting as an advocate and to help facilitate a discussion about employment including but not limited to exploring opportunities and developing a plan to pursue the individual's goal.

Site visits are subject to change based on availability of staff and weather conditions.
