Veteran's Services

Silhouette of American Soldier

SWCIL is dedicated to serving Veterans and offers the following community-based services for Veterans and their families:

· Seeking/maintaining employment
· Locating and securing housing
· Social Security applications and appeals
· Finding appropriate community resources
· Budgeting/financial management
· Gathering and/or organizing information and records such as medical, employment, etc.
· We tailor services to meet individual needs

These services are not a replacement for benefits that a Veteran may qualify for from the US Department of Veteran Affairs, state Veteran services, programs offered by their respective units and those offered by agencies affiliated with federal or state Veteran programs.  Veterans with disabilities may access any SWCIL service.

Veteran's - Directed Care
SWCIL has partnered with the Minnesota River Area Agency on Aging (MnRAAA) to provide the “Veterans Directed Care” Program, administered through the Sioux Falls VA Medical Center.  The Veterans Directed  Care program is a self-directed program and a long-term care option for Veterans needing nursing home level of care who would like to stay at home.  This program empowers Veterans and their caregivers by giving them the ability to have direct control over the goods and services they receive to remain living in the community.

Consumer Success Stories...

  • The Caregiver spouse of a 90+ year old veteran said, "I was able to go out this past week to a fund raiser in town. I wanted to jump up and down I was so excited."
  • The Caregiver spouse of an older veteran said, "Services have been so nice. It has taken a burden off. I can now take a few hours for myself and know it is ok."
  • Gus, a 68-year old veteran wrote, "I thoroughly understand, why people could be reluctant to giving up a program they know works, for something new. In my situation, the positive gains have been two fold. I got a great staff, and everyone lives close by... I highly recommend this program to anyone. Works perfect for me.”
  • The Caregiver spouse of a Veteran with dementia commented that she was grateful for many aspects of the program, but now that they have an alarm for theirs doors to keep her spouse safe she can sleep better at night.
