Need a ramp or easy to use steps for your home?

The Southwestern Center for Independent Living (SWCIL) builds ramps or long-tread low-rise steps to provide easy access to your home. The ramps are modular and constructed using treated material.

An initial site evaluation will be conducted by SWCIL upon request by the consumer with the consumer receiving a diagram of the proposed ramp along with an estimated cost projection. SWCIL will include an estimated labor charge for construction of modules and the ramp.

For more information, contact Steve Thovson at 1-507-532-2221 (V/TTY) or 1-800-422-1485 (V-TTY). This program is available in the following counties: Chippewa, Cottonwood, Jackson, Lac qui Parle, Lincoln, Lyon, Murray, Nobles, Pipestone, Redwood, Renville, Rock and Yellow Medicine.

Some Basics

  • Landing at the door is not attached to the house.
  • Posts are attached to 1' X 1' - 3/4" plywood pads which sit on top of the ground.

Railings

  • The top handrail (2 x 6 material) is placed 36" above the decking (measured to the top of the handrail).
  • The bottom rail is a 2 x 4 with the bottom of the rail 4" above the decking.
  • Spindles are put on railings and spaced 3 1/2" apart.

Owner must check with local building official for permits.

SWCIL calls Gopher One to do a utility check prior to building when post anchors are used.
